Hey, all!
One of the partitions of one of my hard drives decided to stop working a half a year ago (something to do with a corrupted boot sector, I'd imagine). Not being able to do anything about the hard drive, I just let it be until I could. Which happened to be yesterday when I finally decided to give Disk Drill a try. Technically, all the files were there but since the boot sector was corrupted, it couldn't mount the partition.
After doing a 15h deep scan on the partition, it most likely found all the files. Why I say most likely is because I wouldn't know - none of the original file names were there, all the names seemed to be temporary names by Disk Drill.
So here's my question - would it be possible to recover the files with their original names? I can't imagine that it would be impossible, since the name should be just a part of the data. Or am I wrong here?
Or maybe there's even a better solution to get the files back in my situation? Since none of my files we're deleted or gone to begin with, I just couldn't mount the partition cause of the boot sector.
All help is very much appreciated and a huge thanks in advance!
Ragnar.
Hi there, thanks for giving Disk Drill a try. Actually, yes, Deep Scan is not able to recover original file names at this moment, more details about it here. However, we do plan to add 2 features in future:
1) True partition recovery exactly for the cases like yours, when the file system is OK, and only boot sector is not available. In theory this should help you recover original disk structure, even original file names, and absolutely all data.
2) Original file names recovery from HFS+ for cases when file system is corrupt, but still recoverable as a binary data from catalog-file. This can also help in your case.
But unfortunately, we'll have to ask you to keep your disk untouched for some more time until we implement this :)
Hi, yournameisJR! :)
Thanks so much for the reply! I guess I will put the disk back to a safe place and wait for your new amazing features. In the meanwhile, I'll just will use what I got from the disk last night.
The files (3 years worth of .zips for my music production project source files) were very super important to me, and even though I don't have the original file names (I have a very specific numeral naming system), I at least have the sources themselves. So I'm insanely happy after 6 months of depression, haha! All thanks to you guys!
Disk Drill for the win! Again, thanks so much!
One of them has already been implemented in the form of "Search for lost partitions" in Disk Drill 1.2. Grab it here: http://www.cleverfiles.com/getdiskdrill
Did you try Search for Lost Partitions? This recovery method was introduced in Disk Drill 1.2, and was improved in version 1.3. If any lost partitions are found, they are added to the list of available ones as virtual partitions, if you then use Quick Scan it will recover all original file structures from them.
Hi,
I did now try to search for lost partitions but it did not find any.
Here, I made a screenshot - http://cl.ly/6bwp
The Untitled 1 partition is which has corrupted data on it. It's been almost a year since it broke down and I really miss some of the very important files I have there. I had 2-3 years worth of my music productions/creations on there and... well, I really did like some of the stuff I did, so I would really love to get them back and work on them some more.
How to proceed? =/
EDIT: Would the Pro version help me out somehow?
If Quick Scan and Search for Lost Partitions didn't return any results, Deep Scan is the last thing to use. Since version 1.3.118, Deep Scan attempts to recover original file names if any data on these is still there.
Quick Scan is available for NTFS. Not sure what's happening in your case. You may send the details to help@cleverfiles.com for troubleshooting.
I got 1.3.112 from apple store. How can I get .118 ? I would like to try to recover the original filenames?
No way until we release an update for Disk Drill Media Recovery or you upgrade to Disk Drill PRO.
Update: the build of Disk Drill Media Recovery available on the App Store actually has this feature built-in already. But remember, that it's not very likely that your Mac file system partitions were deleted that way that part of the catalog is still there and file names are recoverable by Deep Scan, though Disk Drill does that attempt to get the original file names back.
a similar situation here:
- 2 TB USB drive reformatted (erroneously also an MP3 partition on it)
- after reformatting left untouched in order to apply recovery
Question:
- is it possible with Disk Drill to recover this MP3 partition with folder structure intact and full file names preserved (movements of classic concerts not identifiable with code names) ?
- i tried with other recovery programs but no partitions were retrievable although i did not write/save any longer to this disk after the disaster happened
Sindbad, why not try Disk Drill Basic and see if it's possible in your specific situation: http://www.cleverfiles.com/getdiskdrill ?
Each recovery case is different and we can't tell you if your files are recoverable remotely.
Hello,
I just switched to a Mac 2 weeks ago and I'm just learning the computer. Yesterday I couldn't drag and drop a file onto my free agent external hard drive and the guy at geek squad told me that I had to reformat the external. I thought I had problems with the computer so I backed everything up on the external and then I erased the files from the computer with the intention of returning it.
Without knowing that I had to back up the files before reformatting the external to work properly with the Mac I did it and lost my lost files. Then I purchased disk drill pro and was able to recover all of my files. BUT I have a few questions. Here they are...
1. Is there a way to recover my files with the orignal names?
2. What is a partition?
3. When I recovered my files it ate up all of my 1 TB hardrive space, why is that?
4. Most of my files are corrupted or damaged, is there a way to recover these?
Any help would be greatly appreciate.
Thanks!
jgibbs, you should have started a separate topic for these questions, but anyway...
Check this thread from the beginning. If you are using Deep Scan original file properties can only be recovered in rare cases. You should use Quick Scan or Search for Lost Partitions, if they are able to get your data back, it'll have all filenames and paths intact.jgibbs said: 1. Let me google for youjgibbs said: 2. What is a partition?
Once Disk Drill finishes scanning for lost files, it will display the list of recoverable items. You should check the total amount of recoverable data there.jgibbs said: 3. When I recovered my files it ate up all of my 1 TB hardrive space, why is that?
Here's the related article at our knowledgebase.jgibbs said: 4. Most of my files are corrupted or damaged, is there a way to recover these?
hello, heres the sum of my issue:
switched to mac
have old raid 1 drive that i put in external with all my data (thought it would work didnt know you need the controller for a mirror..)
Bought disk drill through app store
deepscan wont pull file names but will pull all the files
help with filenames please? any suggestions? i looked at old lost partitions but all are too small to be the original drive contense and they dont hold anything relative to the drive contense.
ill do anything, help me plz
~Ryan
Any lost partitions found? Did you try to quick-scan them? If that doesn't help, Deep Scan is not able to find original filenames in every scenario. More details on our knowledgebase: http://help.cleverfiles.com/can-i-recover-a-specific-file-with-disk-drill/
i thought deep scan was supposed to find filenames eventually.. there are lost partitions yes but none of them are from the raid 1 build im trying to recover
No, Deep Scan is not Quick Scan...ryan4thewin said: i thought deep scan was supposed to find filenames eventually..
Meaning to say that if the external hard disk has physical issues (as prompted by the red mark beside the disk), it is impossible to recover files through quick scan?
In cases like this, the only way is to do a deep scan and then filter through the data manually?
If you mean the red Info icon by saying "the red mark", then there's actually no connection between that icon and the availability of scanning methods for a specific disk. When the Info icon goes red, it means your disk is having physical issues and they are traceable with SMART. Click it to find the details.
Quick Scan, on the other hand, can only be available for a partition, not the whole disk. And the latest release of Disk Drill, which is version 1.7.188, supports Quick Scan of FAT32, NTFS, HFS+, UFS/UFS2/EXT2/3/4 (in beta) partitions.
